Workshop Descriptions

Monday Workshops

Scriptapalooza 2020
Instructor: Karen Klamczynski
Applicable to D5, D6, D7
Let’s script! In this hands-on workshop, we’ll have fun while we practice scripting. Create new scripts from scratch and learn techniques for “fixing” scripts with errors. Also experience converting a script from another version of Digistar to yours.

Flight School 2020 (D6)
Instructors: Jacob Galloway and Mark Bloomenthal
Applicable to D6
In 2018, we presented a full-day Flight School workshop; in this 1.5-hour version, we’ll cover the essentials of exploring the universe live with your planetarium audience.

Make Your PBR Content Shine
Instructor: John-Paul Ownby
Applicable to D7
Digistar 7 supports physically based rendering (“PBR”), which can make 3D objects look very realistic. Even if you’re not an artist, it is possible to update content to take advantage of these new rendering techniques. You will learn the different texture types and how you can use them to make your models look even more amazing. We will also discuss ways to adapt other PBR content to work well with Digistar’s conventions.

Thursday Workshops

Pressing Matters: Scriptable Buttons
Instructor: Karen Klamczynski
Applicable to D4, D5, D6, D7
In this workshop, create an example show that is controlled by pressing buttons in the control panel. The buttons will only work in order, prevent mistakes, remind the operator what’s next, and reset the show in case of a Fade-Stop-Reset.

Introduction to JavaScript in Digistar
Instructor: Lynn Buchanan
Applicable to D5, D6, D7
Explore JavaScript integration in Digistar by learning fundamentals and creating useful examples. Basic knowledge of Digistar scripting recommended; prior knowledge of JavaScript is not required.

The Sky’s No Limit: Sky Surveys in D7
Instructors: Jacob Galloway, Dan Rees, Benjamin Rota, Milene Wendling Applicable to D7 Learn how to use Sky Surveys and the new Telescope controls in D7 to explore the universe in new ways. Benjamin Rota and Milene Wendling from the University of Strasbourg will share insights into the context and background of this data and provide educational demonstrations.

Friday Workshops

Stream a Little Stream
Instructors: Mike George, Michael McConville, Dan Rees
Applicable to D4, D5, D6, D7
Expand your operational reach and learn to provide content via streaming services such as YouTube and Facebook. This workshop explores the best practices of streaming using Digistar and the Open Broadcaster Software (OBS). We’ll look at flat-screen and 360-degree content (360-streaming is a new D7 feature).

Troubleshooting 101
Instructors: Melinda Orms, Ben Buckwalter, John-Paul Ownby
Applicable to D4, D5, D6, D7
Get an overview of Digistar architecture and learn how to identify and solve common problems. This workshop will empower you to understand, diagnose, and solve common issues.

Flight School 2020 (D7)
